The floor is only as flat as what is under it
Most flooring complaints — bouncing, gaps, squeaks, planks that click apart — come from the subfloor, not the flooring. In older houses around Springfield and Chicopee the subfloor is usually board, often laid diagonally, often with a century of settlement in it. Lay a modern click floor straight onto that and it will telegraph every dip within a season.
So we measure the floor before quoting it. Sometimes the answer is a levelling compound, sometimes an underlayment, and sometimes the honest answer is that the floor needs more work than the flooring does. We say which.
What suits which room
Luxury vinyl plank handles basements, kitchens and bathrooms because water does not destroy it and it tolerates the humidity swing a New England basement goes through. Engineered wood is the better look and holds up well upstairs, but it does not belong below grade. Solid hardwood is the longest-lived of the three and the fussiest about moisture.
We will match the material to the room rather than to the showroom, including when that means a cheaper product is the right one.
Transitions, trim and the parts that show
The difference between a floor that looks installed and one that looks fitted is at the edges: tight seams, clean transitions between rooms, shoe moulding that follows a wall that is not straight. In an old house no wall is straight, and scribing to it takes time.
That time is where the finish comes from. It is also the first thing cut from a cheap quote.
FAQ
Which flooring is best for kitchens?
LVP is the winner right now — waterproof, easy to install, comfortable underfoot. Tile is bulletproof but colder and harder. Hardwood works but avoid it directly under the sink area.
Do I need to remove furniture before you start?
Yes, ideally. If mobility is an issue we can help move furniture for a small extra charge.
Can new flooring go over old?
Sometimes yes for LVP and laminate — but only if the existing floor is level and stable. Old vinyl or tile? Usually better to demo first.
