Our painting process
Prep
Cover floors and furniture. Wash surfaces, patch holes, sand smooth.
Prime
Bare drywall, patches, stains get primer. Prevents bleed-through.
Paint
Two coats standard. Cut lines clean, no drips, sanded between coats.
Cleanup
Furniture back, drop cloths out, touch-ups, final walk-through.
What we use
Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore pro-grade lines — Emerald for interiors, ProClassic for cabinets and trim, Regal Select for ceilings. Not the $25/gallon builder-grade. Better coverage, longer lifespan, worth the extra cost.

Painting an old house is mostly preparation
On a house from the first half of the century the paint is rarely the problem. The problem is what it is going onto: chalked old coatings, bare patches of plaster, glossy trim that nothing will stick to, and caulk that has shrunk away from the joint. Paint laid straight over any of that fails within a couple of winters.
We budget the prep honestly rather than quoting the pretty part and discovering the rest. On most older interiors prep is more than half the labour.
Lead paint, said plainly
Massachusetts homes built before 1978 may contain lead paint, and disturbing it — sanding, scraping, heat — is regulated work. We do not sand or scrape surfaces we have reason to think are lead without the proper precautions, and on a house of that age we raise it with you before any work starts rather than after.
It is not a reason to avoid painting an old house. It is a reason to do it the right way, and to be told about it up front.
Exterior timing in this climate
There is a real window for exterior painting here, and it is shorter than people think: the surface has to be dry, the temperature has to stay above the paint's minimum overnight, and late autumn dew will ruin a coat that looked fine at four in the afternoon.
We would rather move an exterior job to the right week than put a coat on that will not last the winter.
FAQ
How long until I can move furniture back?
Latex paint is dry to touch in 1-2 hours but for full cure and no marks, we wait 24-48 hours.
Do you paint over wallpaper?
Preferred is to remove wallpaper first. If it's too much or damaged, we can prime with oil-based primer and paint over, but the wall texture will show.
What about lead paint in older homes?
Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. We work with clients on approach case-by-case.
Cabinet painting — how long does it last?
Done right (proper prep, ProClassic paint, sanded between coats) — 8-12 years easily. Done wrong (skipping prep) — 6-12 months before chips and peeling.
