What actually fails on a siding job
Siding rarely fails because the siding was bad. It fails because the water management behind it was. In Western Massachusetts a wall takes freeze-thaw cycling all winter, wind-driven rain off the river valley in spring, and full sun in August — and every one of those finds the same weak points: the flashing above a window, the gap where a deck ledger meets the wall, the spot where somebody cut a hole for a dryer vent and filled it with caulk.
So most of the care on our siding jobs goes into things you will never see: house wrap lapped the right way, flashing that sheds water outward instead of behind, and penetrations detailed properly rather than sealed and hoped for. A cheap siding job skips exactly these, looks identical on day one, and leaks in three years.
Vinyl or fiber cement in this climate
Both work here, and they fail differently. Vinyl is the cheaper install, needs no painting, and handles cold fine — but it moves a lot with temperature, so it has to be hung loose, not nailed tight, or it buckles in July. Fiber cement costs more and takes longer to install, holds paint well for a long time, and does not move much — but it is heavy, it is brittle on the cut, and it must be kept off the ground and away from standing water.
Which one is right usually comes down to how long you intend to own the house and how much you care about the look up close. We will tell you plainly when the cheaper option is the sensible one — on a rental or a house you plan to sell, it often is.
Before we take anything off the wall
On houses built before about 1980 we look at what the existing siding actually is before pulling it. Asbestos-cement siding was common in this area and still sits on plenty of homes in Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke. Intact and painted it is not a hazard; broken up with a pry bar it is, and removing it is regulated work for a licensed abatement contractor, not for us.
If that is what is on your house we say so, stop, and point you to someone qualified. We will happily side over or around once it has been dealt with properly. We would rather lose the job than create that kind of problem in somebody's home.
What the schedule really looks like
A straightforward house is three to five working days: strip, repair any rot we find, wrap, flash, hang, trim. Rot is the usual reason a job grows — you cannot know how much is there until the old siding is off, so we price the known work and give you a clear rate for the rest rather than a padded guess up front.
Permits depend on the town. Some Western Massachusetts towns require one for a full re-side and some do not; we check before the start rather than halfway through.
FAQ
How much siding replacement costs?
Depends on square footage and material. Vinyl runs cheaper than fiber cement. Free walk-through gets you a real number.
Do I need a permit?
Depends on town. Some MA towns require permits for siding, others don't. We check for you.
